Smile4Rich Charity: Fundraising
IceTee24 - 24 Hour Golf Challenge
Event Location   Golfklubber Kidjaberg, Iceland
Event Description   For most golfers, 18 holes is enough for one day. Some can stretch to 36 holes. A few have attempted more, but only the super-keen (and super-fit) would even attempt to complete 101 holes in a day. Last year, South Winchester Golf Club members, Ben Bradshaw and Charles Dolphin did just that - playing from dawn until dusk, and raising over £2,000 for charity in the process. You’d have thought that would have satisfied their endurance golfing ambitions - it didn’t.

Though understandably tired after almost 15 hours of golf, both Ben & Charles felt they could have played for longer, and they resolved to find a way to beat their 101 hole benchmark. Of course, it’s pretty difficult to play golf if you can’t see your ball, so they knew they had to find a course where they could count on longer hours of daylight. The answer was simple - play a course where the sun doesn’t set. After considerable research into possible locations, Ben & Charles found just what they were looking for - in Iceland!

Situated in southern Iceland, approximately 80km from Reykjavik, the 5,933 yards (Par 71) Golfklubber Kidjaberg will provide a stiff challenge. The course is in perfect harmony with the surroundings, hugging the craggy contours of the vulcanic landscape and the thundering Hvita (White River). Precision off the tees will be needed if the formidable rough is to be avoided, and the small greens are to be reached without timeconsuming searching for wayward drives.

Flying to Reykjavik on 25 June, the team will spend some time familiarising themselves with the course and playing practice rounds. Ben & Charles will also be taking on plenty of carbs in the days leading up to the challenge, and trying to get plenty of sleep in the on-course accommodation which is described as a ‘cabin’ (but appears to double as the green-keepers’ equipment shed!). IceTee24 will tee-off in the early hours of 28 June with the aim of completing 144 holes in 24 hours.

As with their 101 Hole Challenge, Ben & Charles (who will be supported on the event by Rob Brown & Amanda East) will again be raising funds for the Wessex Neurological Centre’s latest Smile4Rich Appeal. Pledging Your Support. Obviously, Ben & Charles would love to beat their 101 hole record, but they also hope to exceed the £2,100 they raised for the charity in 2009. If you’d like to pledge your support for their extraordinary challenge, you can do so online at http://www.justgiving.com/IceTee24.
