| Description | The following article was written by Sue Urquart who, with the help of many, set out to honour the memory of Sophie Carpenter but, in doing so, also brought a grieving community together and raised over £6,000 for the Smile4Rich Appeal. On the 15th December 2007, the ‘One-Off Panto People’ came together to perform ‘Cinderella’, a family panto, at the Boys Grammar School in Poole, Dorset. A matinee and an evening performance drew in an audience of approximately 800 people from the local community. The atmosphere was heightened by the fact that we were all there not only to raise money for the ‘Smile4Rich’ appeal, but also to support the family and friends of Sophie Carpenter who passed on to the higher side of life on December 5th, 2006. Sophie was a bright and fun-loving 11 year old whose personality shone for everyone who knew her. She was dearly loved by her family, friends and anyone she touched; and this was our way of supporting the family, friends and community. Rehearsals began back in April 2007 and from there on none of us could shake the “Bombi Samba” from our minds! (You would have to have been there to have appreciated it! And I’m sure Sophie was). We sang, we danced, we laughed and we cried, but the generosity of everyone involved was astounding and we bonded as a family ourselves. We felt privileged to be involved and it was an experience that none of us will ever forget; just as none of us will ever forget Sophie! Footnote: On 31st May, members of the cast and crew visited the Wessex Neuro Centre to present cheques totalling over £6,700 to the Smile4Rich Appeal. They were a given a tour of the unit, and shwn exactly where the new PVT Suite will be built. Professor Fenella Kirkham was on hand to accept the donation, and to say thank you on behalf of the WNC & the Smile4Rich Appeal. Please click download link below for a photo of the presentation. |
